"Progress on Kinds Road Overpass as at 6th September 2011"

Welcome to the Calder Action Group

And please sign our new petition below.

The Calder is a significantly better road than it was when we started campaigning in 2007. A look at out Mission on this site will show that a number of our objectives are now old history. The Kings Road Overpass stands out as one of the most important developments, providing easy and safe connections to Watergardens and the general neighbourhood. The restoration of the 100Km/hr speed limit through that section of the Calder has been greeted very enthusiastically by many. Like most roads there is still a safety problem in some sections. The Calder Park Drive “at grade” intersection where the speed limit is still 80 km/hr can still be a hazard although there are only a few recorded serious accidents lately, helped by the construction of a U-turn facility for traffic going to Melbourne at the
Organ Pipes Road junction.

The lack of a grade separated intersection at Calder Park Drive remains our major challenge. The need for this Overpass is heightened by the significant progress being made towards a major Arterial Road known as the Palmers Road Corridor which will connect to the Calder at this intersection. Eventually a six-lane road would connect the Calder to the Ballarat and Geelong Roads, contributing to a strategic transport network serving the rapid growth in population in the north and west of Victoria. Hence we consider the construction of the Calder Park Drive Overpass urgently needed to initiate this new Corridor and complete the Calder to full freeway standard in this remaining deficient area. Our objective remains to have this section of the Calder meeting the standard of the remainder of the
Freeway and serving to complete the elegant route to Bendigo and the towns of the North West.

An additional incentive has arisen recently with growth in both the local population, including the new suburb of Plumpton, in the road traffic into the area and the frequency of rail traffic through the Calder Park Drive level
crossing. At peak times it is becoming a frequent hazard that cars are banked back from the rail crossing for the whole one and a half km to a stationary line on the edge of the Freeway. The Overpass will help to alleviate this but clearly the Corridor project will have to grade separate the rail and road crossing at an early date even to meet existing activity. An additional problem will arise in Jan 2019 when a new bridge over Kororoit Creek on Westwood Drive is opened. This bridge will connect the previously blocked Palmers Road Corridor project road, mentioned above.

Thank you for your interest in our Web-site and we’d welcome your input, participation and hopefully strong support if this worthy situation attracts you.

We have on 4th October 2018, raised a Victorian Parliament’s Legislative Council ePetition to try and persuade the State Government to fund the project to build the Calder Park Drive Overpass. We would appreciate your support by encouraging all who feel this need to sign up to the petition on line. The link is:
